WHAT IS WATER POLO?
Water polo is a team water sport. The game consists of four quarters in which two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of regulation play wins the match. A water polo team consists of one goalkeeper and six field players in the pool at any time. In addition to these seven players, teams may have substitute field players and goalies that are not in the water. The game of water polo is typically played in a deep pool, and players require endurance and stamina to play the game.
The game of water polo consists of players swimming, this being with and with out the ball, egg beatering (a form of treading water), throwing, catching, and shooting the ball. All of these actions must be done using a single hand. On each team, every player, except the goalkeeper, participates in both offensive and defensive roles. This requires them to have the ability to play both offense and defense.
The game of water polo is a contact sport. Both minor and exclusion fouls are very common in the game. An exclusion foul is a foul in which the player is suspended from the game for twenty seconds.
